Outdoor, alfresco and pool tiling in Albury

Outdoor tiling around Albury: alfresco, patio, balcony and pool surround tiles, slip ratings, falls, membranes, heat and frost, plus sourced labour costs.

Outdoor tiling in Albury has to cope with sun, rain, summer heat and winter frost, so it needs grippy tiles, a fall that carries water away from the house, and enough movement joints for the slab to expand and contract. Alfrescos, patios, balconies and pool surrounds each add their own details. Albury Tilers does not tile anything itself; it forwards your request to an independent provider who quotes the job directly with you.

Why people tile outside

  • Turning a plain concrete patio or alfresco into a finished outdoor room.
  • Replacing cracked or lifting tiles on a verandah or front entry.
  • Retiling around a pool where the old coping or paving has moved.
  • A balcony that is leaking into the room below.
  • Matching an indoor living floor through to the alfresco.

Outdoor tile options compared

Option Strengths Watch for
Outdoor porcelain, 20 mm pavers Strong, can be laid on a bed or pedestals Heavier, needs a firm base
Outdoor porcelain, standard thickness Matches indoor tiles, glued to a slab Must have an outdoor slip rating
Natural stone such as travertine or bluestone Stays cooler than dark tiles, classic look Needs sealing, can be slippery when polished
Pool coping tiles Bullnose edge for the pool rim Must suit chlorinated or salt water

Ask for the slip rating classified under AS 4586. The national cost guide we rely on lists outdoor non-slip porcelain in the P4 to P5 range, and around a pool or on a sloping entry that grip matters more than the colour.

What the provider checks

  • The base. Outdoor tiles go on a concrete slab or a properly built screed. A cracked or sinking slab has to be repaired first.
  • Falls. The surface needs to drain away from the house, and water should not pond against doors or weepholes.
  • Height at the door. Tiles and adhesive raise the level. The provider checks that the new surface will not sit above the indoor floor or block the sill.
  • Balcony membranes. A tiled balcony over a room needs a membrane under the tiles. AS 4654.2 covers design and installation of external waterproofing membranes above ground (Standards Australia).
  • Pool surrounds. The provider checks the pool’s edge beam and whether the pool fence or gate will be disturbed. Any change to a pool barrier must keep it compliant, so plan that before the job starts.

How an outdoor job runs

  1. Remove old tiles or pavers and clean the slab.
  2. Grind or patch the surface and build up falls where needed.
  3. Apply a membrane on balconies or over living areas.
  4. Lay the tiles with full adhesive coverage, which stops water sitting in voids and freezing.
  5. Form movement joints at the perimeter, over slab joints and across large areas.
  6. Grout with a product suited to outdoor use and seal the joints.

What does outdoor tiling cost?

A national cost guide puts outdoor and patio tiling labour at $50 to $110 per sqm, and natural stone labour at $70 to $150 per sqm (What’s The Damage, last verified October 2026). Lifting old tiles is $20 to $55 per sqm, and levelling or building up the surface is $15 to $50 per sqm. Tiles, membranes and any concreting are on top. Our tiling cost guide for Albury explains how to compare quotes line by line.

Rules that apply

In NSW a tiler must be licensed once the job tops 5,000 dollars with GST, and a job above 20,000 dollars needs Home Building Compensation cover in place before any deposit is paid (icare, Home Building Compensation Fund). A new roof over an alfresco, a raised deck or a balcony rebuild may need council approval, so ask before work starts rather than after.

What a careful provider will not do

  • Lay a dark, polished indoor tile in an exposed pool area.
  • Tile a balcony over a room without a membrane.
  • Spot-fix tiles with dabs of adhesive, which leaves hollows for water and frost.
  • Leave out movement joints on a large alfresco to keep the pattern unbroken.

Albury weather and outdoor tiles

Bureau of Meteorology averages for Albury Airport show a January mean maximum of 32.5 degrees and a July mean minimum of 3.1 degrees, with an average of 44.4 days a year at or below 2 degrees. Tiles on a west facing alfresco take a lot of heat in summer, then contract on cold winter nights. That cycle is what pops tiles laid without joints or with patchy adhesive. Light coloured stone or porcelain also stays cooler underfoot around a pool.

Greater Hume Council describes Jindera as having residential subdivisions and rural living lots, where an alfresco can face open paddocks with no shelter from the afternoon sun. Across the river, Wodonga’s Leneva Baranduda growth area is planned for up to 6,037 new dwellings (Wodonga Council), so new outdoor areas on recent slabs are a growing share of Wodonga jobs.

What to do next

Measure the area, note whether it is on a slab, a balcony or around a pool, and photograph any cracks. Then ask for an outdoor tiling quote, and an independent provider can advise on tile grade and falls. For the waterproofing side of a balcony, read shower and wet area waterproofing.

Frequently asked questions

Which tiles are safe around a pool?

Choose a tile with an outdoor slip rating suited to wet barefoot areas and a matt or textured surface. Ask the supplier for its rating under the Australian slip resistance classification and avoid polished finishes.

Can tiles go over an old concrete patio?

Usually, if the slab is sound, drains away from the house and has no active cracks. A provider will patch or grind it first and carry any slab joints through the tiles.

Why do outdoor tiles come loose?

Patchy adhesive leaves voids where water collects, then freezes on winter nights or expands in summer heat. Missing movement joints and a base that cracks are the other common causes. Full adhesive coverage and joints are the cure.

Does a tiled balcony need waterproofing?

Yes, where the balcony sits over a room or enclosed space. A membrane goes under the tiles and is detailed at the door sill and drains. Leaks from balconies often show up as stains in the room below.

Can outdoor tiles be dark?

They can, but dark tiles get very hot in an Albury summer and can be uncomfortable barefoot. In fully exposed areas such as pool surrounds, pale stone or porcelain is the more comfortable choice.
